Outcomes
Executives could visualize data to make high-level observations as well as detailed discoveries in their own time without relying on weekly reports
the Problem
Billions of dollars in production and sales data was only visible through a myriad of portals, tools and reports. Each week employees scrambled to pull this information together into a Powerpoint presentation for executives who then had to make crucial decisions on how best to operate the company.
Solution
A small team including a business analyst, myself and a developer were given a green light with a small budget and limited time to come up with a solution. In just a week of work, I was able to establish a design system and intuitive interface for a custom analytics tool that consolidated the multiple streams of information to be mined and consumed freely. In another few weeks the tool was developed using Tableau with a custom front end and released to executives who were impressed with not just the power of the tool itself, but the speed and efficiency of our small team.
Outcomes
Executives could visualize data to make high-level observations as well as detailed discoveries in their own time without relying on weekly reports. Employees still created weekly reports, though in much less time and with better insight. The operating efficiency of the company was improved with a very small investment in a short amount of time.
What did I learn?
Sometimes the best work is done by a lean team, under pressure, with few resources
Ambiguity and autonomy are great for bolstering creative license and motivating teams
Don’t be afraid to look to other industries for inspiration - Bloomberg was had some great examples.
