From raw data to clear insight

HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) professionals rely on data to prevent serious injury and environmental damage. But focusing raw data into an image that delivers critical insight requires a very specific lens.

Blurred vision

I worked as the Senior Product Designer at Pixaera, who provide the frontline workers of heavy industries with engaging HSE training using VR and other platforms. During the training a vast array of data is collected, but without the right focus, it delivers very little value.

Looking deeper

I developed and executed a research plan that focused on understanding the types of decisions HSE professionals needed to make and the information that influenced them. I interviewed three HSE managers and two HSE SMEs.

I gained not only a deep understanding of the user, but also their world; where they worked, what kept them up at night, their priorities and how they solved problems. It became clear how our data could help them and where there was opportunity to enhance the product offering to provide even more support.

Crafting the lens

I worked closely with our founder/product manager and data visualisation engineer to design a tool that addressed users’ needs and goals. We analyzed data, defining what it actually represented, it’s statistical significance and how it clarified what was happening in real life. We reviewed and tested the designs with HSE experts and leaders, making adjustments until everyone could naturally describe what they were looking at and the value it delivered to their role.

Insight

The final product exposed gaps in trainees’ knowledge, tracked training activity, performance, feedback and gave clear insights into the state of a workforce’s safety readiness. This enabled HSE professionals to target locations, groups of people or individuals and take action to close gaps and prevent catastrophic events before they happened.

This was just one part of the total Pixaera training management package for which I was the sole product designer.
